As National Science Week comes to a close, I am thrilled to share my incredible experience of presenting to a group of enthusiastic Year 12 Environmental and Earth Science students. Their bright minds and confidence in the pursuit of knowledge have left me excited for what the future holds for them.
Throughout our discussions on Sustainability, here are the Top 5 things I believe will shape these young minds on their career journey:
🚀 1. Embracing Nonlinear Careers: One of the most exciting aspects of the modern world is the ever-evolving nature of careers. Many of the jobs that these students will have one day haven’t even been invented yet! The message is clear: embrace change, welcome the unknown, and remain adaptable as the career landscape shifts.
🔬 2. STEM: A Pathway to Limitless Opportunities: STEM is a solid launch pad for a myriad possibilities. From the R&D lab to the Boardroom, and everything in between, STEM has given me a rich and rewarding career. Imagine designing new products, getting paid to shop in New York, creating TV and radio campaigns, growing businesses, mentoring entrepreneurs and shaping the industry with an innovation hub; there’s never been a dull moment in my work life!
💫 3. Passion Meets Purpose: Pursuing your passion is crucial, but even more important is following your purpose. The world needs individuals who are not only enthusiastic about their interests but are also committed to making a meaningful difference. At Global IQ Group, we take pride in being a purpose-driven organisation dedicated to creating healthier buildings, more sustainable cities, and championing great ideas and innovation. Every day, we strive to contribute positively to our world.
👥 4. The Power of Positive Connections: Surrounding yourself with amazing individuals can shape your journey in profound ways. Just as my son’s Year 7 teacher advised him to “find better friends,” the significance of this advice rings true for everyone. Good friends uplift and inspire us to become the best versions of ourselves. I’m grateful for the diverse tribe of wonderful humans I am fortunate to have in my life – my family, my colleagues and friends.
💖 5. Embrace Ikigai: In our pursuit of happiness and fulfillment, embracing the concept of Ikigai can be enlightening. Ikigai, a Japanese concept, represents the convergence of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. It’s a beautiful harmony that lies at the crossroads of passion, profession, mission, and vocation.
As we bid goodbye to National Science Week, let’s remember that the torch of scientific curiosity, innovation, and dedication burns ever bright. To the Year 12 students, your journey is just beginning, and the world eagerly awaits the contributions you will make.
Let’s keep exploring, discovering, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The future is in your capable hands!
